About Alibris
Richard Weatherford is a bookseller who loves old books and new technologies. After teaching at the university for many years, Dick switched to selling antique books through professional catalogs at his home near Seattle. He soon realized that computer databases could provide a lot of help for antique book transactions. In 1982, he wrote a business plan for a company that would create an online database for used booksellers. He called Interloc because they would act as contacts (ie “intermediate” English teachers) to help sellers find hard-to-find books. Unfortunately, start-up funds are more difficult to obtain than the contracted JD Salinger, partly because personal computers are still scarce, expensive, and difficult to connect.
In 1991, Dick was hired by Faxon, a book and magazine subscription service company, to search BookQuest, an online database mainly for old booksellers. BookQuest failed, but it taught Dick a lot and brought the idea of Interloc back to life. Because of the exponential growth in the use of computers, the idea seemed timely and Dick was able to raise nearly $50,000, most of which came from booksellers who respected his ideas and vision. Interloc was launched in 1993, when the World Wide Web was not widely used.
The first successful online bookseller service
Initially, Interloc was a database for professional booksellers. It is not open to the public. Dick recruited Tom Sawyer, who released Record Manager in 1993, the first desktop software for bookstores. The data standard Tom developed for Record Manager, called UIEE, is still widely used today. Interloc allows vendors to use DOS-based computers to transfer book list files to modems. Interloc established the first system to match customer requirements or “wants” with books available for sale. This is a groundbreaking system where small businesses became the first successful bookseller online service.
A global perspective on the country road
In 1997, Marty Manley asked a writer friend how to find a copy of his out-of-print book. Manley has a resume that people can politely call non-standard: among other things, he has served as a mechanic and leader of several unions, a management consultant for McKinsey & Company, a popular transformation expert, and Bill’s Assistant Secretary of Labor… Clinton. At dinner, the author suggested that Marty use Interloc to find a copy of his book. Marty found the book and was immediately attracted by the rich content of Interloc. He looked for Richard Weatherford and was quickly introduced to him in the office on top of the tallest skyscraper in San Francisco.
Marty and Dick discussed how Interloc can become a company that can bring the growing power of e-commerce to independent booksellers, while providing extraordinary choices for companies and book lovers. They spent three weeks traveling and meeting with booksellers across the United States to find out which methods worked and which did not work in the emerging world of online book sales. At the end of these trips, they decided to start a new business from Interloc.
This is how Alibris was born. Marty started a new business in California, and the first employees came to work at his home.
A different way to sell books online
From the beginning, Alibris has brought several new methods of online book sales:

By creating complex logistics capabilities at low cost from the start, Alibris will serve these customers, and booksellers can benefit from increased sales.
Excellent market intelligence. Since Alibris naturally collects a lot of information about book sales, the company has been able to provide customers and sellers with the necessary market information. Today, Alibris knows which books are selling and what their prices are. Alibris helps sellers to constantly update prices and ensure that commercial customers have access to data on hard-to-find and used books like new ones.
